Bruno Cua from Georgia seems to be trying out the sovereign citizen defense. Both of his lawyers have filed a motion to withdraw, seemingly because he wants to represent himself. When the judge asked him if he wanted to represent himself he did not answer that question. Instead he said “I’m here by special appearance, not a general appearance.”
The judge replied that he had no idea what he’s talking about. The defendant repeatedly would not answer the judge’s questions.
The judge also noted that if he did want to represent himself, they would have to have separate hearings in order to ensure he was making a decision knowingly and voluntarily.
The charges he’s facing carry a potential 20 year prison sentence.
Considering that this defense never works, I don’t see this ending well for him unless he changes his mind and gets an attorney.
