This story discusses the extremist movement in New Zealand. Interestingly, they make a distinction between individuals in the common law movement and sovereign citizens. Both groups do not believe they are subject to existing laws but intelligence officials believe the common law movement is more proactive than sovereign citizens, the latter of whom they describe as being more passive.

Another difference between those in the common law movement and sovereign citizens are that those in the common law movement are more likely to create common law assemblies, anoint sheriffs and hold grand juries who attempt citizen’s arrest. They estimate that there are as many as a dozen common law assemblies in New Zealand and approximately 50 sheriffs. They believe assembly meetings are almost certainly taking place on a weekly basis.
