The Department of the Attorney General of Michigan is reporting on the case of Damon Montgomery, who sent three checks to Treasury in an attempt to pay his taxes. Each check contained specific routing numbers for a bank for which he had no account.
He asserted that he was a sovereign citizen and was exempt from certain laws, including paying taxes.
“He now faces three counts of no-account check, felonies punishable by two years in prison or $500. The charges were filed in Ingham County’s 54-A District Court.
More proof that sovereign citizens tactics do not work. One cannot just decide to no longer follow the laws. This behavior will get you into trouble.
