Cyprus police have uncovered an unprecedented case involving a group of 80 individuals operating under a self-declared military code, refusing to recognize the authority of the Republic. Following an investigation sparked by a real estate dispute, authorities found that the group had been issuing their own legal documents, using custom seals, and engaging in behavior consistent with sovereign citizen ideologies.

The suspects allegedly impersonated military personnel, postal workers, judges, and judicial officers, presenting fraudulent credentials to advance their objectives. Some members carried insignias resembling official U.S. emblems, and one arrested suspect wore a jacket labeled “Department of the Navy” while claiming affiliation with unnamed “generals” outside Cyprus. Despite rejecting the legitimacy of Cypriot law, the group paradoxically used the country’s coat of arms on their stamps and produced documents resembling military court minutes.

Authorities have already arrested two individuals, a man and a woman, with warrants issued for a third. Court proceedings revealed further bizarre claims, including a suspect stating, “I am under the American flag,” and citing an international decree that supposedly justified their actions. He denied being a legal “person,” instead insisting he was an “entity.”

Police suspect the group’s activities may be tied to financial disputes, particularly with loan management companies, and some members have outstanding fines and other civic obligations they refuse to recognize. The detained individuals are now facing charges related to conspiracy, impersonation, spreading false information, and participating in a criminal organization.

This case highlights the global spread of sovereign citizen ideology, which has traditionally been prominent in the U.S. but is now taking root in various regions. The group’s reliance on pseudo-legal documents, fabricated authorities, and resistance to government institutions mirrors sovereign citizen tactics seen in other countries. As authorities continue their investigation, the case underscores the challenges law enforcement faces in countering such extremist legal theories that undermine state sovereignty.

Wanted Sovereign Citizen Issues Defiant Video, Orders Release of Arrested Members

Cyprus Police have identified 45-year-old Kostas Patsalidis from Limassol as the third suspect in an ongoing investigation into a group of 80 individuals operating under a sovereign citizen-like structure. Authorities issued an arrest warrant for Patsalidis on charges including conspiracy to commit a felony and the use of forged documents.

Two members of the group—a 62-year-old man and a 43-year-old woman—have already been detained under an eight-day court order. Meanwhile, Patsalidis released a video publicly challenging the police investigation. In his statement, he accused law enforcement of violating international conventions and went so far as to demand the release of the arrested individuals, declaring, “It is an order!”

The case continues to highlight the increasing presence of such extremist legal theories in Cyprus and the challenges authorities face in addressing them.
