A self-declared sovereign citizen named Yvette-Terese Reiman appealed her conviction of assaulting police officers.
She was pulled over by the police in May 2020 for having an unregistered and uninsured vehicle with no plates. She refused to follow the directions of the officers and instead did what sovereigns typically do, which is refuse to get out or roll down the window. She was also reading from the Bible and referring the Magna Carta.
She threatened to run over the officer and was eventually arrested.
In the appeal, she challenged the court’s jurisdiction, claimed that she did not require a registered or insured vehicle, and stated something about there being an “error in fact of law.”
She lost the appeal.
“Judge Fantin noted that “despite the appellant’s apparently strongly held belief otherwise, none of these -repeated incantations have any relevant legal effect.”
