Former Nelson mayor Rachel Reese experienced a harrowing intrusion into her home when she encountered an enraged stranger one evening. Upon returning from the supermarket, Reese was confronted by the man who had illegally entered her house through a sliding door. The intruder, who had helped himself to food, showered and charged his vape, aggressively claimed ownership of the property, and shouted at Reese.
The situation escalated when he discovered Reese holding the garage door remote, prompting her to quickly secure herself inside the house. With the help of a neighbor, the police were called, and the man was eventually apprehended.
Subsequent events revealed concerning details about the intruder’s mental state, including his grandiose delusions and erratic behavior, leading to legal proceedings and mandatory mental health treatment.
They believe this man is a sovereign citizen. The intruder asserted that Rachel Reese’s home was now “his,” based on what he claimed was a decree. He also referenced the Magna Carta.
The intruder’s statements about missing children being in Reese’s house and other irrational claims, as described by witnesses, could have been a QAnon reference.
“Tasman Mayor Tim King recently spoke to an LGNZ forum about safety concerns for elected members and council staff. He said the rise in behaviour among those known as Sovereign Citizens had gone from being annoying and time-consuming to that which had raised increasing concerns around public safety.”
