The following involves the police shooting of Chase Allan. Here is what we know so far:
-
- He was stopped at a post office Wed March 1 for having an “illegitimate license plate”
- Police say Chase Allan “asserted his independence from the laws of the land” during the traffic stop and refused to cooperate with the officer
- He refused to cooperate with officers, would not roll down his window and give his ID to the officer
- Asserted his belief that he was not required to provide information to the officer, and, because of that, he was not required to cooperate, and police called for back up
- Police tried to get him to exit the vehicle, but he refused, and they tried to remove him when an officer yelled, “gun. gun, gun!,” which prompted a struggle that only lasted a few seconds
- Only partial body cam video is available
- The family learned about their son’s shooting from the news (as opposed to the police informing them)
- His mother was a known sovereign citizen who sued the same police department in September 2022
- His parents have already been in touch with Bobby Lawrence, the American State National (ASN)/sovereign citizen guru
- Mr. Lawrence teaches seminars on how to become an ASN. They do not regard themselves as sovereign citizens but there is virtually no difference. The nomenclature is a bit different, but the behavior is the same
- The ASNs are banding together and writing letters to the police; they have claimed him as one of their own
- Body cam footage of the traffic stop has been released
- Inside Edition included new footage of his mom getting pulled over and presenting a passport, along with Mr. Allan in court yelling about treason
- Here is another video with more footage from his mom’s traffic stop along with her court hearing where Mr. Allan is present

Additional information about Mr. Allan from The Salt Lake Tribune (March 7, 2023)
- Mr. Allan’s license plate read: “Utah, American State Citizen” and “Notice, Private Automobile Not For Hire.”
- Mr. Allan was physically removed from multiple courtrooms last year after attempting to intervene on behalf of both him mother and another woman. He was combative with the judge and demanded “Are you committing slavery and involuntary servitude?” Two deputies dragged him out of the courtroom and locked the door.
- In a separate case, Mr. Allan “voluntarily showed up” to court on behalf of a woman fighting a traffic ticket. Mr. Allan was “disruptive and non-compliant” and “began to resist officers,” and “refused to comply” when told to leave the courtroom. This got him arrested and transported to jail where he refused to identify himself. “When asked to stop interrupting, [Allan] responded that deputies had no authority over him, using an expletive.”
- The article says that “Allan was not known to be associated with any sovereign citizen groups, according to both the Utah Attorney General’s Office and the Utah Department of Public Safety” but on the message boards the ASNs have claimed him as one of their own.
