The Treasury Inspector General released a report regarding compliances guidelines regarding illegal tax protestors. The main takeaway is that the with the passing of the IRS Restructuring and Reform Act of 1998, IRS officials are not allowed to designate, anywhere in their files, taxpayers as an “Illegal Tax Protester.”
Why? Because “Congress was concerned that some taxpayers were being permanently labeled and stigmatized by the Illegal Tax Protester designation. The concern was that this label could bias IRS employees and result in unfair treatment of the taxpayer.
The aforementioned report is basically an audit to determine if that law was being adhered to.
Interesting to learn that it was against the law to flag possible tax protestors.
