The jury recommended death for Markeith Loyd and the judge agreed. He was found guilty of murder in the death of Lt. Deborah Clayton in November 2021. He was also convicted of aggravated assault carjacking.
Mr. Loyd is also facing life in prison for the death of his pregnant ex-girlfriend Ms. Sade Dixon.
In an interesting turn of events, Mr. Loyd’s defense team hired clinical psychologist Dr. Xavier Amador to testify about his having anosognosia, a condition associated with serious mental illnesses including schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Mr. Amador also found Mr. Loyd incompetent. During his testimony, Dr. Amador explained to the jury that Mr. Loyd did not understand the proceedings taking place against him and that he has “fixed, false belief there’s that there’s absolutely nothing wrong with him.” He diagnosed Mr. Loyd with schizophrenia.
Though Mr. Loyd had previously identified himself as a sovereign citizen, and used those arguments in court, they were seemingly nowhere to be found in the recent court proceedings.
Is not clear why he abandoned that argument. Perhaps he realized that it would get him nowhere in court.
